Braces in Warners Bay & Newcastle
A straight smile is often a healthier smile that is easier to keep clean, take care of and show off to the world! Because overlapping, crowded, unevenly spaced or protruding teeth can lead to additional oral health issues related to bite and wear, at SmilesHQ, we are proud to start offering traditional orthodontic braces.
Dr Amy Calvin now provides braces for straightforward orthodontic cases in Warner’s Bay.
What Are My First Steps for Getting Braces?
If you are a current patient at SmilesHQ, Dr Calvin can provide an evaluation for you. If you are new to our dental practice, we will need to start with a full evaluation, including x-rays, imaging, 3D models and a clean and polish. It’s always best to start any dental treatment with healthy teeth and gums.
Advantages of Traditional Orthodontic Braces
While we proudly offer Invisalign® clear aligner orthodontics, traditional braces also provide many advantages.
- Time-tested reliable orthodontics
- No compliance concerns
- Sometimes less costly treatment
- No risk of losing or damaging aligners
Depending on your unique situation, Dr Amy Calvin will go over your options for Invisalign or braces, along with the pros and cons of each, so that you can make the best choice for your smile.
Do I Need to See a Specialist Orthodontist?
If your case is overly complex, Dr Calvin may refer you to a trusted specialist orthodontist to complete your treatment and confer with them on your care. As always, our team at SmilesHQ is focused on helping you achieve your smile goals as effectively and efficiently as possible.
How Do Traditional Braces Work?
Braces work by temporarily placing brackets directly on the teeth and using a wire and elastics to guide movement. You will need to come in for regular adjustments to the wire to continue guiding teeth into their ideal positions.
Teeth may feel slightly sore or sensitive following these adjustment appointments. This is also true for patients who seek Invisalign treatment when they change to a new set of aligners.
Slight discomfort for a few days is a normal part of moving teeth and is nothing to worry about. After all, we are moving teeth and bone. For your comfort, you may wish to stick with softer foods for a few days until your mouth adjusts to the change. If the inside of your cheeks become irritated, special orthodontic wax is available to place on the brackets to smooth them.
Do Braces Require Special Care?
Because braces are fixed (you do not remove them to eat and brush your teeth), they require special care to avoid damaging your hardware.
- Avoid sticky and super chewy foods and sweets
- Cut firm foods like apples into chunks to eat them
- Don’t bite directly into bagels or chewy breads
- Avoid crunchy health bars and nuts that could damage your brackets or wires
Dr Calvin will go over best practices for braces with you. If you damage a bracket or your guidewire, please contact SmilesHQ right away so we can make repairs and keep you on track with your treatment.
